Teeming with meditative imagery and made by an eminent filmmaker paying homage to Tarkovsky, the film is set in the Alawite mountains of Syria. The story rotates around an extended family that has to negotiate its future and lineage after the death of its patriarch. A realist narrative told with a mystical viewpoint, this film has been described as marking a definite transition in Syrian cinema, and has been selected for Un Certain Regard at Cannes.

The Night (al-Leyl. Mohammad Malas (Syria), 1992, 116 min). Set in the filmmaker’s native town of Quneytra in the Golan Heights, the film weaves a personal story around the larger events that defined modern Syrian as it emerged in the 1930s and 1940s. Highly acclaimed for its stunning visual beauty, the film rotates around the memory of a dead father who had fought in Palestine in 1936 yet also regarded as a person with mixed legacy in the town. Hailed as a stylistic watershed in Arab Cinema, the film has been selected for screening in the Berlin, Rotterdam, and New York film festivals.

The Extras (al-Kompars. Nabil al-Maleh (Syria), 1993, 100 minutes). A veritable auteurist film, camouflaging in the garb of a tale of two lovers’ attempt to elope a powerful critique of state and social repression. The entire film takes place in an apartment, which one of the lovers, a mechanic and an aspiring actor, secures for their meeting. Yet the anticipation of love is constantly interrupted with tales, anxieties, shadowy figures, social and personal fantasies, paranoia and humor. A multiple award winner, this work was Maleh’s fourth feature film, and it helped establish him as one of the most innovative filmmakers in the Arab World today.

Verbal Letters (Rasa’el Shafahiyyah. Abdullatif Abdul-Hamid (Syria), 1991, 105 min). Winner of the Golden Olive at the Valencia Mediterranean Film Festival and the Special Acknowledgement at the Asiatica Film Mediale in Italy in 2003 “for the lyricism with which [the director] was capable of describing the tricks of fortune and the reality of war.” Like his other films, Abdul-Hamid uses a deceptively simple story to explore complex themes. Tender and sophisticated, the story is loosely adapted from the story of Cyrano de Bergerac. The plot rotates around a young man too embarrassed to approach a beautiful young woman he has fallen in love with. He entrusts a close friend with reciting a love letter to her, resulting in the woman falling for the friend.

Everyday Life in a Syrian Village (al-Hayat al-Yaomiyyah fi Qaryah Suriyyah. Omar Amiralay (Syria), 1974, 85 min, B&W). A classic by what many regard as the Arab World’s best and most elegant documentarist. Its narrative was made all the more compelling due to the collaboration in making it by the late Sa'adallah Wannous, one of the most innovative modern Arab playwrights. The documentary presents a powerful critique of “development” as conceived by the state. Highlighted are a variety of perspectives in the village, including farmers, health workers and a police officer, offering contrasting approaches to local life, all rendered in the context of an ongoing lyrical visual commentary on landscape, life and death.

Oussama محمد (سوريا / فرنسا)، 2002, 113 min). عَجّ بالصورةِ المتأمّلةِ وجَعلتْ مِن قِبل منتجِ أفلام ساميِ يَدْفعُ ولاءاً إلى Tarkovsky، الفلم يُحْلُّ الجبالَ Alawite مِنْ سوريا. تَدُورُ القصّةُ حول عائلة كبيرةِ التي يَجِبُ أَنْ تُفاوضَ مستقبلَها ونسبَها بعد موتِ أبِّه. أي قصة واقعي أخبرتْ مَع a وجهة نظر باطنية، هذا الفلمِ وُصِفَ كتَأشير a إنتقال مؤكّد في السينما السوريةِ، وإخترَ للإعتبارِ المُتَأَكِّدِ الغيرِ في كان.

الليل (الLeyl. محمد Malas (سوريا)، 1992, 116 min). حلّْ بلدةَ منتجَ الأفلام المحليةَ لQuneytra في مرتفعاتِ الجولان، الفلم يَنْسجُ a قصّة شخصية حول الأحداثِ الأكبرِ التي عرّفتْ السوري الحديثَ كما ظَهرَ في الثلاثيناتِ والأربعيناتِ. عالي السّمعة لجمالِه البصريِ المذهلِ، يَدُورُ الفلمَ حول ذاكرةِ a أبّ ميت الذي قاتلَ في فلسطين في 1936 إعتبرَ لحد الآن أيضاً a شخص بالتراثِ المُخْتَلَطِ في البلدةِ. إعتبرَ a stylistic حَدّ فاصل في السينما العربيةِ، الفلم إخترَ للفحص في برلين، روتردام، ومهرجانات نيويورك السينمائية.

الإضافيات (الKompars. نبيل الMaleh (سوريا)، 1993, 100 دقائق). أي فلم auteurist حقيقي، تَخفّي في زَيِّ a حكاية مِنْ محاولةِ حبيبين لهُرُوب a نقد قوي مِنْ القمعِ الرسميِ والإجتماعيِ. يَحْدثُ كامل الفلمِ في شُقَّةِ، التي إحدى الأحباءِ , a ميكانيكي وممثل طَمُوح، يَضْمنُ لإجتماعهم. رغم ذلك توقع الحبِّ يُقاطعُ بشكل ثابت بالحكاياتِ، تخوّفات، شخصيّات غامضة، تخيلات إجتماعية وشخصية وذُعُر ومرح. أي فائز بالجوائز متعدّد، هذا العملِ كَانَ فلم Maleh الطويلَ الرابع، وهو ساعدَ على تَأسيسه كأحد منتجي الأفلام الأكثر إبتكاراً في العالمِ العربيِ اليوم.

Abdullatif عبد الحميد (سوريا)، 1991, 105 min). فائز الزيتونِ الذهبيِ في مهرجان البحر الأبيض المتوسطِ فالينسيا السينمائي والإعترافِ الخاصِّ في فلمِ Asiatica Mediale في إيطاليا في 2003 “ لlyricism الذي به [المدير] كَانَ قادر على وَصْف خُدَعِ الثروةِ وحقيقةِ الحربِ. ” مثل أفلامِه الأخرى، إستعمالات عبد الحميد a قصّة بسيطة بشكل خادع لإسْتِكْشاف مواضيعِ معقّدةِ. الطري والمتطوّر، القصّة تُكيّفُ بشكل طليق مِنْ قصّةِ Cyrano دي Bergerac. تَدُورُ المؤامرةُ حول a شابّ أحرجتْ أيضاً لإقتِراب a شابّة جميلة وَقعَ في حبّ. يَأتمنُ a صديق مقرّب بقِراءة a الرسالة الغرامية إليها، يُؤدّي إلى الإمرأةِ يُعجبُ بالصديقِ.

حياة عادية في a قرية سورية (الYaomiyyah الحياة fi Qaryah Suriyyah. عمر Amiralay (سوريا)، 1974, 85 min، بي & دبليو). أي كلاسيكي مِن قِبل الذي يَعتبرُ الكثيرَ العالمَ العربيَ أفضلَ وأكثر documentarist الرائع. قصته جُعِلتْ لدرجة أكبر إرْغام بسبب التعاونِ في جَعْله بنهاية Sa'adallah Wannous، أحد أكثر كُتّابِ المسرحيات العربِ الحديثينِ المبتكرينِ. البرنامج الوثائقي يُقدّمُ a نقد قوي مِنْ "التطويرِ" كما هو مَحْمُول من قبل الحالةِ. المُبرَزة a تَشْكِيلة المنظوراتِ في القريةِ، بضمن ذلك المزارعين، عُمّال صحةِ وa شرطي، يَعْرضُ نظراتَ متضاربةَ إلى الحياةِ المحليّةِ، كُلّ المُعَادون ضمن سياق مستمرةِ
